Life on the Homestead
There’s something deeply satisfying about a life built on self-sufficiency, hard work, and simple joys. At Hill River Homestead, we believe in getting back to our roots—growing and preserving our own food, cooking hearty meals from scratch, and embracing the traditions that have shaped generations before us.
For us, homesteading isn’t just about the food on our table—it’s about faith, family, and the love poured into every meal. It’s about early mornings with coffee in hand, tending to the day’s work, and gathering around the kitchen as something slow-simmered fills the air. It’s about passing down skills that matter, teaching our kids the value of hard work, resilience, and taking pride in what we create.
And at the end of the day? It’s about good company, a well-earned meal, and maybe even a cold beer while the sun sets over the land we love.
This is the life we choose. Rooted in tradition, made for today.
About Us
Hi, we’re Scott and Shannon, the husband-and-wife team behind Hill River Homestead. Nestled in northern Minnesota, we’ve always lived a life close to the land—though for the longest time, we didn’t call it homesteading. To us, it was just living.
It all started out of necessity—feeding a family of eight on a tight budget meant growing what we could, cooking from scratch, and learning to make do with what we had. Over time, that necessity turned into a passion for self-sufficiency, clean eating, and simple living. Now, we’re working to grow our homestead even further, embracing a life that’s rooted in tradition, built on faith, and centered around family, love, and freedom.
At Hill River Homestead, we share the skills and recipes that have kept our family going—from hearty, homemade meals (we’ve got six boys, so trust us, portions are big!) to preserving food the old-fashioned way and building a self-sustaining lifestyle.
And of course, we believe every good meal deserves a cold beer—because you can’t grill without one in hand. 🍻
